November is Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness Month! Diabetes is a serious disease, and it affects many older adults.

Did you know that older adults with diabetes are at higher risk* for depression or cognitive impairment compared with others their age who do not have diabetes. Having depression or cognitive impairment can make diabetes self-care challenging.

Having tools that encourage healthy behaviors and provide education about the care and management of the disease are crucial for the prevention of serious complications and improving quality of life.

Patients/residents, family, and caregivers need to understand the disease and the importance of adhering to their diabetes treatment plan.

Briggs offers resources developed with the older adult in mind that are written in easy-to-understand language to help with the educational process:  Patient Education Guides for Diabetes and Diabetes Mellitus Diagnosis Disclosures.  You can learn more about these resources here.
