Each October, long-term care and assisted living communities across the nation come together to celebrate their residents in honor of resident rights month. This annual tradition is an important reminder of the dignity, autonomy, and rights of residents living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other long-term care settings. It is also a time to observe the significant role these residents play in bringing joy and vitality, heart and soul to their communities.
Resident Rights Month is sponsored by the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, and each year a unique theme is chosen. The theme serves as a uniting point for celebrations, discussions, and educational activities. For 2025, the theme emphasizes empowerment, advocacy, and celebrating residents’ individuality.
As you engage in celebration throughout this month, remember it is also a call to action. A reminder for caregivers, families, and policymakers of the importance of protecting residents’ voices and ensuring quality care. By honoring residents and reinforcing their rights, we foster a culture of respect, compassion, dignity, and inclusion in long-term care and assisted living communities.
Resident rights month is also a wonderful way to foster inter-generational engagement and awareness through celebratory activities, bringing residents together with their local communities and schools in meaningful ways. What better mechanism to demonstrate resident resilience and wisdom than sharing their deep well of experiences, perspectives, and valuable life lessons through community by using their unique voices. BE CREATIVE in celebrating all residents this month (and every month thereafter) and remind them just how lucky we are to serve and honor them each day!
