In case you missed it, CMS’ National Training Program provided a great webinar on March 8, 2018 to provide information for providers/partners on the new Medicare card initiative that kicks off April 1st. This webinar was the March event for the CMS Learning Series and was well worth the time!

All providers serving Medicare A beneficiaries need to start now to prepare for these new Medicare cards. All beneficiaries eligible April 1, 2018 will receive this new card; there will be a roll-out over the next year to get the new cards – with new, randomly generated numbers – to existing Medicare beneficiaries. The roll-out will be done by geographic location.

The new Medicare card/number is an initiative that has been in the works for a very long time. The purpose is for the protection of all Medicare beneficiaries. The existing cards contain Social Security Numbers with an alpha and sometimes numeric suffix – a boon to those engaged in identity theft.
