CMS just completed an Open Door Forum that focused on the status of the new Medicare card project.
The transition period is in process for just the next 16 weeks. All new Medicare cards have been mailed with over 61 million beneficiaries receiving new cards in the mail since April 2018. All Medicare beneficiaries and providers should be using the MBI numbers now. As of today, 79% of Medicare fee-for-service claims now include the MBI.
As of January 1, 2020, providers must:
- Submit claims with the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). CMS will reject claims submitted with the Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN), with limited exceptions and
- Submit all eligibility transactions with the MBI. CMS will reject all eligibility transactions submitted with the HICN.
The ODF presentation slides are found here. There’s a lot of useful information on these slides for plans, pharmacies, ACOs, Medicaid agencies, private payers and third-party group payers. There are also links to additional information on Slide 19, the last slide.
In about 3 weeks from today, you’ll be able to access the audio podcast and transcript at the Podcast and Transcripts website.
