As I write this blog, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is announcing a new initiative –  TestIowa.  This will be a “viral” effort to identify and stop the spread of COVID-19 in the state of Iowa.

“In Iowa, we take care of each other, and COVID-19 can show us the power we have when we work together. The best thing you can do right now to stop the spread and save lives is take a health assessment so we can better understand what is currently going on in Iowa.”

What is TestIowa?

TestIowa is a new initiative in partnership with our state leaders and private corporations. Our goal is to dramatically increase the rate of COVID-19 testing so Iowans can have better access to testing and help stem the spread of COVID-19 to get us back to normal as quickly as possible.

Why is it important to consider testing?

  • The sooner we can identify COVID-19 cases, the sooner we can get back to our normal way of life.
  • In addition to social distancing, widespread testing is a proven, effective way to combat the spread of COVID-19.
  • Testing gives us crucial data that we need to track the spread of the virus, contain it, and to help find a cure and save lives.

How do I get tested?

Drive-through test locations can accommodate up to 3,000 tests per day.

Iowa is the 2nd state to adopt this program – Utah began the program 2 weeks ago.  The program is described as allowing everyone in Iowa to control their health.

TestIowa FAQs provides information regarding the program including data security concerns and testing questions.

This is what you’ll see as you start the assessment:

“If ever there was a time in which the State of Iowa needed the collective action of its citizens, that time would be now.

By participating in this optional assessment (in which you may opt out at any point), you are not only helping yourself, your family, and your community—you’re helping to best mobilize vital resources in the fight against COVID-19.

In Iowa, we value the role of limited government and recognize that asking citizens to provide personal information may be uncomfortable and concerning to some. However, users can be assured that their personal data will be used exclusively for the purpose of fighting COVID-19 and will be destroyed once the immediate threat of the virus subsides. Personal data shared is protected under Iowa Code Chapter 715C.

By clicking ACCEPT below you agree to share your contact information and assessment responses with the State of Iowa. You also agree to the terms and conditions and privacy policy. The platform where your data is stored has a comprehensive set of controls that meet various security requirements. Those requirements include ISO 27001 and HITRUST. Further, in the event there is a test conducted, the patient’s name, test result and other information will be reported to the Iowa Department of Public Health as a reportable disease under Iowa Code section 139A.3

Please note: It is important that every person in your household fill out their own assessment. Upon completing the assessment, you will be receiving follow up communications via text and email.

Thank you for doing your part in helping Iowa unite against the spread of COVID-19!

This assessment is provided by the State of Iowa.”

Once you read through the above verbiage, you accept or decline and answer the assessment questions.

Governor Reynolds notes that there are additional states moving to incorporate this assessment in the fight against COVID-19 and opening their states back up.  The Governor asks all Iowa citizens to participate in this assessment.
