This information is intended for Long Term Care Facility Administrators, Directors of Nursing, MDS Coordinators, Registered Nurses, and Social Services staff who work directly with the Minimum Data Set (MDS).
The Licensing and Certification Program at the Minnesota Department of Health is offering three free MDS classes. The classes will be presented by the State RAI Coordinator, Nadine Olness, RN RAC-CT. The classes are intended for Minnesota nursing home staff who complete the MDS. The classes will be held at the Minnesota Department of Health, 85 East 7th Place, St Paul, MN, Check in at Room 220
Class information
The classes will be held on March 1st and 2nd at the Minnesota Department of Health, 85 East 7th Place, St Paul, MN. Participants are welcome to take any or all of the classes, and must register by Friday, February 24, 2023.
Space is limited to 80 participants for each class. If the class is full, your name will be added to the waitlist and you will be notified if an opening becomes available.

An Overview of MDS Sections C, D, E, and Q 8:30 a.m. -12:00 p.m.
This class is appropriate for Social Services staff and others who complete these sections of the MDS. Participants will be able to:
- Describe the intent of sections C, D, E and Q of the MDS
- Identify when it is appropriate to complete the Staff Assessments for Mental Status and Resident Mood
- Identify when Rejection of Care has occurred
- Apply the coding instructions to accurately code sections C, D, E and Q of the MDS

Common MDS Coding Errors 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
This class is appropriate for experienced MDS Nurses who would like a refresh. The focus of this class is on MDS items reviewed during a Case Mix Audit. Participants will be able to:
- Identify the implications of an inaccurate assessment
- Identify the most common MDS coding errors and how to prevent them.
- Understand how to correct an inaccurate assessment

Basic Training for New MDS Nurses 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
This full day class is appropriate for staff who are new to working with the MDS. For the best experience, attendees should have some experience completing the MDS.
- Identify the importance of MDS accuracy and the impact of an inaccurate assessment
- Identify the OBRA and PPS assessment scheduling requirements
- Understand the coding requirements for the resident interview items
- Understand how to correctly code ADLs on the MDS
- Identify the requirements to code an Active Diagnosis on the MDS
- Identify the components of a comprehensive CAA and Care Plan
- Understand the MDS Correction Process

These classes are appropriate for staff who work directly with the MDS in Minnesota nursing homes. Space is limited to 80 participants for each class.
