The Joint Commission – Effective July 2020 – Revisions to National Patient Safety Goals

Sharon Hamilton MS, RN, CFDS
Clinical Consultant, Briggs Healthcare

Effective July 2020, The Joint Commission approved changes to its National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) for all applicable accreditation programs. Because the NPSGs identify high-priority patient safety topics that are assessed during every accreditation survey, The Joint Commission periodically reviews them using contemporary literature, internal data, and surveyor cadre and leadership assessments. Based on this review, several NPSGs will be moved to standards and others will be retained as NPSGs. Refer to the prepublication reports to examine the status of the NPSG requirements and the edits, which include editorial changes and deletions or consolidations of elements of performance.

Home health specifically addresses medication information and reduction of fall risk, but all applicable accreditation programs are included.
